Congratulations to Polly Woodbury and Bich-Ngoc Turner for getting the answer right: Sa Pa Market in Little Hanoi in Prague, Czech Republic! Back when the Czech Republic was part of Communist Czechoslovakia, the country welcomed guest workers from Vietnam. As of the 2011 census, there were an estimated 83,000 Vietnamese in Czech Republic. According to Radio Praha, the Vietnamese community revolves around a huge open-air market known to Czechs as "Little Hanoi", and to Vietnamese as "Sapa", after an area of outstanding natural beauty in Vietnam.

I'm in a gondola being serenaded with O Sole Mio by my gondolier clad in traditional uniform as I make my way down an artificial, chlorinated grand canal. SEAC is sponsoring a Roundtable Discussion on Myanmar and the Rohingya Crisis, organized by Associate Professor of Anthropology Ben Marwick, on January 11, 2018 at 6:00 pm in Thomson 101. Our featured articles this week were published in the Mekong Review, a new Southeast Asian literary journal, and provide background regarding the historical context of the current crisis and a critique of Aung San Suu Kyi’s response to the ethnic violence.

The SEAxSEA Film Festival is part of the Southeast Asia Center’s mission to actively organize Southeast Asia-related programs, and features films that explore Southeast Asia in its diversity, emphasizing underrepresented communities and youth-produced visions of the past, present, and future.
In this, our inaugural year, we are proud to feature two full-length documentaries from indigenous female storymakers from Southeast Asia. “War is a Tender Thing” by Adjani Arumpac features the conflict in Mindanao, Philippines, vis-a-vis her own heritage as half-Muslim and half-Christian. “The Peace Agency” examines the role that a grassroots women’s organization founded by Lian Gogali has in maintaining peace and rebuilding Poso, Indonesia. In addition, we are pleased to show many short films from the region, most of them student-made.

Call for Manuscripts: "Asian Politics"
Education About Asia (EAA) is the peer-reviewed teaching journal of the Association for Asian Studies. Our print and online readers include undergraduate instructors as well as high school and middle school teachers. We are developing a special section for spring 2018 titled “Asian Politics.” The following are suggested manuscript titles that might be appropriate for the issue but we certainly welcome other submission possibilities: "Asian Democracies: An Overview,” "Teaching about the Crisis on the Korean Peninsula,” “Anglo-American Historical Influences and Contemporary Asian Governments,” “The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire in World History,” “The Rise of Asian Nationalism,” “Indonesia’s Political Prospects,” “Religion, Politics, and Contemporary India,” “The Geopolitical Ramifications of China’s Post-Mao Rise,” “Tokugawa Japan: Myths and Realities,” “Japan and the UK; Contemporary Politics and Government,” “Lee Kuan Yew’s Political Thought and Asia,” and “Civil Society in Contemporary Asia.”
Please consult Submissions to Education About Asia before submitting a manuscript for this special section. Please note our relatively modest feature article and teaching resources manuscript word-count ranges. Prospective authors who are unfamiliar with EAA should also read archived articles and essays available at no charge in the website below my signature. The 2018 School of Pacific and Asian Studies (SPAS) Graduate Student Conference on Asian Studies, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, March 14-16, 2018- Abstracts due January 20, 2018.
We are interested in proposals for papers, panels, and performances, reflecting on what scholars and others deem “The Asian Century.” Through historical rotation of power, Asia is taking prominence on the global stage. We are interested in research that examines this concept, especially the ways that smaller countries across Asia have gained power. We are also looking for presentations that address inter-Asia and hegemonic interactions, whether through politics, economy, or culture, and can support or contest disciplinary and regional approaches to the study of the Asia Pacific region. With this goal in mind, we also encourage those with a background in the arts to apply.
We are especially looking for papers that:
· Involve original research in all areas of Asia and Asian Studies
· Incorporate interdisciplinary methods and frameworks
· Engage comparative studies or transnationalism
· Explore new and emerging trends in Asian Studies
· Critically re-examine existing methodologies and frameworks
· Present Asian performance practices

Adjunct wanted for Modern Asia course at Seton Hall University, to start during Spring semester of 2018. The introductory level survey course “History of Modern Asia” covers Asian history and culture from 1800 to the present. The course will meet twice a week for an hour and fifteen minutes at the South Orange, NJ campus of SHU (exact times to be determined).
Recent PhD graduates or ABD candidates with research interests in China, Korea, Japan, Southeast Asia, or Mongolia will be considered. College teaching experience preferred.
