The Getty Foundation supports institutions and individuals committed to advancing the greater understanding and preservation of the visual arts in Los Angeles and throughout the world. We do this through grant initiatives that increase access to museum collections, strengthen art history as a global discipline, advance conservation practice, and support current and future leaders in the visual arts. We carry out our work in collaboration with the other Getty programs—the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Conservation Institute. Since 1984, we have awarded nearly 7,000 grants benefiting over 180 countries on all seven continents. The majority of the Getty Foundation's grants for institutions and organizations are awarded through special initiatives focused on a specific issue or region. In a number of cases, applications are by invitation rather than through open competition.
